The prices of vegetables from Almería have been affected by an increase in the horticultural supply in Central Europe.
The unusual weather this year has led to an early end to the pepper season, with the plants depleted earlier. This has caused prices to be relatively high, with California yellow pepper averaging €2.84/kg, and red and Italian green peppers exceeding €2/kg
Meanwhile, tomato prices have also increased, reaching up to €1.80/kg at auction for round tomatoes or pear tomatoes. Cucumbers, courgettes and aubergines are experiencing low prices due to higher production as the weather is currently very good.
The watermelon season is approaching, with the first fruits already being cut this week. While supermarkets in the region are already importing watermelons from Morocco and Senegal, importers are waiting for Almería to start their season, as they believe the quality of watermelons from Almería is better. Quality is key to Almería’s success and the region is consistently improving.
