The fruit and berry industry in Ukraine has been impacted by late April frosts. Temperatures dropped to five degrees below zero in Ukraine’s northern areas, causing brief frosts. In order to reduce harvest losses, Ukrainian fruit and berry growers had to put anti-frost measures in place. Fortunately, flowering berry farms were only sometimes impacted by the temperature drop.
However, growers from some central Ukrainian regions, especially Cherkasy and Vinnytsia Oblasts, reported a drop in temperature below zero with ground frost on May 11th and May 12th. The strawberry plantations, which were in the blossoming stage, suffered as a result. Plantations downstream suffered considerable damage, but producers who responded fast and put anti-frost measures in place, like direct irrigation, are anticipated to reduce their losses.
Thankfully, the majority of farmers in other parts of Ukraine reported stable blossoming on their berry crops, suggesting that frost damage is localised. Future climatic conditions will still have an impact on the success of the 2023 fruit and berry crop in Ukraine and other nations. Frosts might still occur through the end of May, and any more harm could have an impact on the nation’s fruit and berry harvest.
The impact of these frosts could have a ripple effect on the country’s economy, as the fruit and berry business is a significant contributor to Ukraine’s agriculture industry. However, it is too early to determine the extent of the damage to the industry. Ukrainian farmers will have to remain vigilant and continue implementing measures to protect their crops as the country heads into the summer season.
