Following statistics from the Customs and Excise Department, Spain’s imports of fruits and vegetables surged dramatically in the first two months of 2023. The import value of fruits and vegetables climbed by 19% to €638.5 million from the same point in 2022.
When compared to the same time last year, imports of potatoes and avocados rose by 67% and 69%, respectively, while those of tomatoes and green beans fell by 14% and 2%.
In terms of frequency, apples, kiwis, bananas, raspberries, and avocados were the most frequently imported fruits. The most expensive fruit to import was raspberries, which cost €46 million. Bananas, €41 million, kiwis, €55.5 million, apples, and avocados, €55 million, were the next most expensive fruits.
Overall, the value of Spanish vegetable imports increased by 24% to €238.5 million, while fruit imports increased by 16.5% to €400 million. Spain imported 631,516 tonnes of fruits and vegetables, a 14% rise, of which 343,921 tonnes were fruits and 287,595 tonnes were vegetables.
Based on these numbers, there is a significant domestic and international demand for fresh fruits and vegetables in Spain. It also emphasizes how significant the Spanish market is for exports of fruits and vegetables around the world.
