The stone fruit season in the southern Spanish province of Huelva began last week with the first nectarines being picked in foil greenhouses.

According to reports, the fruit has a better color than usual this year and the harvest is taking place on the usual dates. A spokesperson for a local producer noted that they had thought they would start harvesting later due to low temperatures, but the high temperatures throughout March meant that they could still harvest on time.

It’s reported that the region is expected to have a good yield this year as it has not experienced any frost, unlike other areas. Local farmers also use macro tunnels to protect the fruit, ensuring a steady supply throughout the season. Spanish stone fruit is in high demand at the moment, with little supply from overseas, leading to a surge in demand from European retailers.

Producers in Huelva are among the first to market Spanish stone fruit each year, with around 4 million kilos of extra early stone fruit being sold both on the domestic market and in other European countries.
