The harvest of stone fruits has started in the Extremadura region, with apricots being the first to arrive in a small number of cases. Nectarines, peaches, and early flat peaches are among the other stone fruits that are anticipated to shortly follow suit. However, the first types were harmed by the March cold, which resulted in lower yield in May. Barring any unfavourable weather circumstances, the June harvests are predicted to be normal in terms of volume.
The cooperative anticipates a regular production rate for plums, the most emblematic fruit in the area, with the exception of the late variety Angeleno, whose volumes are predicted to significantly fall this season due to poor flowering. Early June will see the arrival of older, less significant varieties of plums, but Black Splendour, the variety that usually heralds the beginning of the season, won’t come until between June 15 and June 20. Sources say that the Spanish plum may have an edge in the market this year due to lower volumes of plums from Chile. The Chilean Angeleno plum has faced competition from the early Black Splendor in the past, but it is less likely to occur this year since there may not be many Chilean plums left by the end of May. This may help Spanish plums attract more attention at the beginning of the season.
