Spain has emerged as the second highest earner in the world for pepper production, according to data from the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The report states that Spain generated 1,692.76 million euros in income from pepper production in 2021, following China, which earned the most with 11,371.11 million euros. Mexico came in third with 1,329.25 million euros.
The value of worldwide production of fresh pepper was calculated at 27,629.45 million euros, based on the exchange rate at the end of 2021 when one US dollar was worth 0.879 euros.
The data further revealed that Spanish farmers earned 2.09 times more than their Turkish counterparts, who earned 807.96 million euros, and 3.31 times more than Dutch farmers who earned 510.01 million euros. Moroccan producers, in comparison, earned only 51.61 million euros, 32.79 times less than the value earned by Spanish farmers.
The report also reveals that Spain is one of the top producers of peppers in the world. The country is known for producing a wide range of pepper varieties, including the famous paprika from the region of Murcia. Spain’s favorable climate and geography make it an ideal location for the production of high-quality peppers.
The agriculture sector is a significant contributor to Spain’s economy, and the latest data from FAO highlights the country’s strong position in the global market for pepper production. The report is good news for Spanish farmers and the wider economy, and it highlights the importance of the agriculture sector in Spain’s economic growth.
