Peruvian Grapes Market
Since 2018, Peruvian grapes exports and production have increased, breaking records and setting new benchmarks every year. In the previous growing season, Peru declared that grapes were its main agricultural export and that it was the world’s top exporter of grapes by both value and volume. Given the recent investments made in the sector, grapes are a crucial product for Peru, and the country places considerable priority on dominating both the value and volume of exports.
Peru’s production is anticipated to reach 766,000 metric tons, up 7% from the previous season. Exports are anticipated to reach a new high of 586,000 metric tons, an increase of 8% from 2021–2022. Meanwhile, according to the USDA, Chile’s exports and grape output would both fall by 7.1%, to 732,000 metric tons and 565,000 metric tons, respectively. The drought and a decline in planting area—the latter caused by competition from more lucrative crops like cherries—are the main causes of Chile’s expected decline in grape production.
U.S. Grape Market
In 2021/22, the top two export destinations for Peruvian grapes were the United States and the Netherlands, with Hong Kong coming in third. Mexico and the UK were tied for fourth place, placing mainland China and Spain in sixth place. It’s interesting to note that Peru sends more grapes to Hong Kong despite having a free trade deal with China dating back to 2009.
The late-year U.S. grape supply has become increasingly dependent on Peruvian grapes.
USDA trade statistics show that between 2009 and 2022, U.S. imports of Peruvian grapes grew from $20 million to $455 million in November and December. Peruvian grape imports to the United States have increased significantly, rising from $80 million in 2012–13 to about $799 million in 2022–23, when they are at their peak.
According to data from the USDA, the two months of December and January in the 2022–23 growing season saw a peak in U.S. imports of Peruvian grapes, which together accounted for approximately 60% of the season’s total value.
There are currently no estimates for Peruvian grape exports in 2022–2023.
