Pear Perfect: A New Variety Earns Licensing for US Market Entry

In an attempt to clear up any ambiguity regarding protocols, US pear growers have established new guidelines for treated pears. 

Conditions for Anjou pears are determine by growers and shippers of pears from the Northwest of the United States. 

Starting this season, all red and green Anjou pears sold as “conditioned” have to test positive for ethylene for at least 100 parts per million for a whole day. 

Additionally, according to the Pear Bureau Northwest, the fruit’s average pear pulp temperature must be 65 degrees. 

Ten percent of Bartletts and thirty to forty percent of green Anjou are condition in the area. 

An industry-wide standard for conditioning processes, according to the bureau’s president and CEO Kevin Moffitt, will help clear up any misunderstandings over the pear-ripening process. 

Another attempt to make the procedure clearer is the official term for ethylene treatments of pears has been established as “condition”.

Emerging Fruit in US Markets
