The first New Zealand kiwis have arrived at the port of Zeebrugge, marking the start of a new season. The previous year was challenging for the kiwifruit sector due to quality issues, but there is hope for the future. The free trade agreement between New Zealand and the EU has been deemed satisfactory.

The 2022 season was difficult due to unfavorable weather and COVID-19. Closed borders led to a shortage of workers and inconsistent quality. However, with borders open, worker availability has improved and measures have been taken to prioritize quality. Early feedback suggests good quality in initial shipments, but overall volume is lower than last year.

Green kiwi volume is expected to be the lowest in two decades, but this presents an opportunity to improve quality and prepare for higher volumes in the future. The Ruby-red variety is expected to do well, initially available in New Zealand and select Asian markets with plans to expand to Europe. Kiwi transportation is underway with charter programs ensuring timely deliveries.

The New Zealand-EU Free Trade Agreement eliminates tariffs on kiwifruit exports, benefiting growers and promoting growth.
