In March 2023, Moldova shipped slightly more than 19,000 tonnes of apples, which was more than the exports of about 15,000 tonnes in February, according to East Fruit. It falls far short of the 25,000 tonnes per year on average for March exports during the previous five years. Only 11,000 tonnes were exported in March 2022, at the start of the difficult phase of the war in Ukraine, compared to approximately 19,000 tonnes in the same month of 2021 and 27,000 tonnes in 2020.

The Russian market took less than 50% of Moldova’s apple exports last month, which is 9,800 tonnes. Kazakhstan bought 5,600 tons of apples, while Romania purchased 1,400 tonnes, which is the same amount as the previous month.

Moldova also exported a significant volume of apples to the UAE, with 549 tonnes, Saudi Arabia with 340 tonnes, and Oman with more than 100 tonnes. Moreover, approximately 1,000 tonnes of apples were exported from Moldova by sea through the ports of Romania in March.

Based on the data from the customs service of Moldova, agricultural producer organizations specialists noted that the average March price for exported apples is $0.77/kg.

Despite the situation in traditional markets and the still challenging logistics, the specialists believe that it is a good price. The slightly intensified exports in March resulted in a slight increase in the minimum wholesale prices for Gala, Granny Smith, and Golden apple varieties by $0.01-0.02/kg in early April. Market operators expect that the gradual increase in the price of apples will continue this month.
