A village in the Spanish province of Zaragoza called Mequinenza has seen the start of the cherry season earlier than usual thanks to mild weather and little rain. The earliest open-ground cherry crops in Europe are produced in this region because of its favorable microclimate, which is well known.
Despite lower-than-expected yields in northern Spain due to heat during the flowering period, the cherry trees have been given plenty of rest following last year’s low harvest. This has consequently had a favorable effect on the cherries’ quality. Since there is so much interest in starting the cherry season, the cherry market, which is currently primarily domestic, is anticipated to soon expand to other European nations, Dubai, and Hong Kong. The packing plant has been enlarged by an additional 1,000 square meters to suit the new crop, and this year’s production is anticipated to be close to one million kilograms. New hydrocooling equipment is also included, as well as new shipping and receiving chambers for production.
