The Italian pear sector has been facing challenges for the past 3-4 years. Previously, the country’s pear production was sufficient to meet domestic demand, but now there is a need to import pears from abroad. An expert in the pear sector confirms this situation. Insects, diseases, and frost have severely impacted the pear sector, particularly a specific variety in Emilia Romagna. Importing large quantities of pears, which was uncommon in the past, has become necessary, with produce coming from various countries and arriving earlier than usual.
It is concerning that Italy is importing pears from other countries, indicating issues within the domestic market. A wholesaler supports this view, stating the need to import due to the lack or poor quality of domestic pears.
Reports confirm that national production used to meet domestic demand, with a portion being exported. However, in the previous season, exports were exceptionally low due to limited supplies caused by adverse climate factors. The production for that year was significantly lower than previous years.
Exports decreased by a significant percentage compared to the previous season, aligning with the decline in Italian pear production. Export share seems similar to previous years. Previous years saw export volumes ranging from high to low, depending on domestic supplies and regular production.
Export volumes for the current season have improved compared to the previous year but are still below their potential due to difficulties caused by low-quality pears. The domestic market has also seen some recovery in consumption during the second half of the previous year, although it remains below average.
