An Italian avocado grower recently revealed his observations on the dynamics of the nation’s avocado market. The grower, who has more than thirty years of expertise, remarked that there is always a need for Italian avocados, with the fruit primarily coming from the south of the country. Avocados that are organic are very sought-after and can cost up to €4.50/kg.

Emergency irrigation was needed until January 2023 due to the recent lack of rainfall in some locations, which resulted in reduced grades.

The Italian avocado season normally begins with the Bacon variety in late October and lasts through May with the Hass kind. The grower remarked that in addition to Sicily, Puglia, Sardinia, Basilicata, and southern Lazio, Italian avocados can also flourish. The country’s output levels are still low in compared to imports, despite avocados’ rising popularity in Italy.

The farmer is attempting to increase production. He has planted more than 200 hectares over the last five years and continues to do so at a rate of roughly 20 hectares per year. Although the quality of Italian avocados is well known, the producer noted that production needs to be improved and that the grades and forms are still inconsistent.
