The avocado market witnessed a strong start in 2023, driven by the growing demand for healthy food choices. Supermarket chains capitalized on the ‘healthy resolutions’ trend, shining a spotlight on avocados, often referred to as a ‘superfood.’ However, prices remained high due to limited availability caused by unfavourable weather conditions during the bloom, particularly in Israel. Insufficient fruit supply and smaller sizes posed challenges in meeting customer demand.
Looking ahead to June, which is traditionally considered the avocado month, avocados are expected to maintain their popularity among consumers. The South African season began earlier with substantial volumes of Fuerte and Pinkertons, but heavy rainfall resulted in skin damage and stem rot, leading to a decline in greenskin prices. The situation in Ukraine affected avocado demand in Russia, redirecting greenskin avocados to other regions in Europe.
Anticipated trends include reduced availability of Hass avocados from South Africa and a decrease in greenskin supply in the coming weeks, leading to price increases. However, supply is expected to improve later in the season. Peru, Colombia, and Kenya have been reliable sources of avocados, with Kenya showing positive developments in terms of quality, and Tanzania gradually establishing its presence in the European avocado market.
