California Fall Grapes Supply

The California Table Grape Commission intends to increase the demand for the state’s table grapes abroad in important markets with its 2023 export marketing campaign.

According to a press release, the 16 target markets for the 2023 season accounted for slightly under 95% of export volume from June through December 2022.

Several target market nations saw a growth in volume and market value in 2022 compared to 2021 despite a number of global export challenges:

  • South America
  • In Hong Kong
  • Indonesia
  • Mexico
  • In New Zealand
  • Vietnam

According to Kathleen Nave, president of the California Grape Commission, “California table grape still found success in export markets last season despite labour and shipping challenges, inflation, and the value of the dollar.” “The commission is determine to build on that success in 2023 and plans to increase California table grape market share in the targeted export markets.”

The marketing for 2023 is focus on retailer incentives and retail promotions. Promotions for digital retail are for all export markets that are targets.

In a few markets, wholesale campaigns are design to advertise to smaller shops.

In addition to influencer marketing and retailer-tagged television in a few regions, campaign expansions include shopper app and social media advertising in all markets. According to the announcement, promotional activities coincide with busy months in each area.

The 2023 export marketing effort will strive to increase demand for California table grapes around the world, Nave stated in the announcement. “While there may still be challenges ahead for global exports,” he added.

Red and green cultivars with superb flavours are still in great demand. Since each table grape variety performs differently in various nations and areas of the Central Valley, switching types is still an expensive and time-consuming process. Growers must undertake tests before choosing new kinds to make sure that they are suitable for their particular environmental circumstances.

Season

California grapes are at their peak from August to November.

According to data from the USDA, shippers in California transported roughly 80% of their crop in those four months in 2022: 21% in August, 21% in September, 21% in October, and 16% in November, followed by 9% in December.

Less than 15% of the total imported grapes arrived in the period from August through December in 2022, despite the fact that imported grapes make up an increasing portion of the U.S. grape supply (46% in 2021, up from 40% in 2010). According to data from 2022 from the USDA, sixty-five percent of import grapes were sent to the U.S. between January through April.

Over the past ten years, the per-capita consumption of grapes has been rising steadily.

Industry Trends 2023

According to Kathleen Nave, president and chief executive officer of the California Table Grape Commission, “California table grapes still found success in export markets last season despite labour and shipping challenges, as well as inflation and the value of the dollar.” “The commission is determine to build on that success in 2023 and plans to increase California table grapes’ market share in the targeted export markets.” According to early projections, the 2023 crop will be comparable to or slightly larger than the 95.1 million 19-pound boxes produced last season.

In 2023, growers anticipate the release of new unique cultivars that promise increased yields and tastier fruit. In keeping with the general trend, producers in California eliminated underperforming black grape cultivars in 2022 as a result of decreased production and weak market demand.
