The flooding that occurred in the eastern states in late 2022 and two significant hail events in the Goulburn Valley will have a significant impact on the domestic market during this year’s apple and pear harvest, based on a recent report from the Australian Pome Fruit industry.
The industry is anticipated to return to 2020 levels as a result of a decrease in the supply of premium apples and pears on the Australian market. There will still be an adequate supply of high-quality fruit on the market, according to Philip Turnbull, CEO of APAL, despite the lower volumes.
The hail event that occurred on December 22, 2022, affected orchards from Tatura to Bunbartha, leading to an 11.6% decrease in apple and 35.1% decrease in pear production in the national Tier 1 pomefruit supply for this year.
Despite the challenges faced by the industry, Turnbull noted that growers are in a good position to negotiate fair prices with retailers given the lower harvest of quality fruit and strong demand.
He added that the shifts in supply are the basis for important negotiations this year, and growers should take advantage of the situation to negotiate fairly. The CEO expects that with a lower harvest of quality fruit and high demand, apple and pear prices will be higher than in 2022.
