In January 2023, agri-food exports and imports from the European Union increased significantly and surpassed those of January 2022. According to the most recent monthly agri-food trade data, which the European Commission published today, the EU’s agri-food exports and imports totaled €31.8 billion in value.
EU imports totaled €13.8 billion, an amazing 10% increase from the previous year, while EU exports reached a sizeable total of €18 billion, greatly contributing to this accomplishment. As a result, the EU kept its trade balance in the black by €4.2 billion over this time.
The United Kingdom continued to be the leading recipient when looking at the destinations of EU agri-food exports, taking in an enormous 22% of the overall exports. China maintained its position as the third-largest beneficiary with 7%, closely trailed by the United States in second place with 11%.
Brazil continued to serve as the main provider of agri-food products to the EU, accounting for 10% of all imports. Notably, EU imports of Brazilian maize increased significantly from January 2022 to February 2022, by an astonishing 259%, or €144 million.
This significant increase amounts to an extra 448 thousand tonnes. As a result of a 16% increase in EU imports from Ukraine, which totaled €1.2 billion in that month compared to the previous year, Ukraine became the second-largest supplier of agri-food imports into the EU. The agri-food industry in the EU is still thriving, with both exports and imports performing well. These encouraging achievements highlight the EU’s strong involvement in the global agri-food trade industry and underline its importance as a participant in global trade.
