DUTCH ONION EXPORT SEASON PREDICTED TO SET NEW RECORD IN 2022/23.

Holland Onions predicts that the Netherlands will achieve a new record in onion export value for the 2022/23 season, exceeding EUR 500 million due to a rise in onion prices. This is primarily due to lower onion yields in Europe and other parts of the world.

Holland Onions, a major player in the onion export market, has predicted that the Netherlands will break a new record in terms of onion export value during the 2022/23 season. While the volume of exports is not expected to exceed previous records, the value of exports is expected to exceed EUR 500 million due to a rise in onion prices.

This increase in price is primarily due to lower onion yields in Europe and other parts of the world, where unfavorable weather conditions and high fertilizer costs have limited production. In the Netherlands, the gross onion yield for 2022 is estimated to be 1.2 million tonnes, which is the lowest volume since 2019, but still similar to the levels seen in 2013 and 2014. The yield includes 1 million tonnes of yellow onions, 200,000 tonnes of red onions, and 268,000 tonnes of onion plants.

Germany also saw a significant increase in imports, rising from 11,500 to nearly 21,000 tonnes.

Senegal currently leads the ranking of countries importing Dutch onions, followed by the Ivory Coast and the United Kingdom. European countries are also well-represented on the list, with Belgium rising from 8th to 5th place, importing 17,000 tonnes more onions than the previous season. Spain doubled its imports, while Portugal recorded the strongest growth, rising from 440 tonnes to over 3,600 tonnes.

On a global scale, onion production is estimated to be around 106 million tonnes, with 92% of that intended for local markets in producing countries. The total export market represents approximately 8%, which amounts to 8.5 to 9 million tonnes. The Netherlands, which is responsible for 20% of the international onion trade, plays a significant role in this market. The rise in onion prices and export value is good news for the Dutch onion industry and will likely have a positive impact on the country’s economy. However, it remains to be seen how this will affect consumers, especially in countries where Dutch onions are a staple food item. The fluctuation in onion yields and prices is a reminder of the importance of sustainable agriculture and the need for resilient farming practices that can withstand changing weather patterns and market demands.
