CITRUS SEASON OFF TO AN EARLY START: EXPERTS ANTICIPATE STABLE MARKET CONDITIONS.

A fascinating start to the international citrus season has been described by experts in the fruit industry. The fact that all citrus fruits have been on the market two weeks earlier than normal is the season’s most remarkable feature. Although this would give the impression that more product is being exported, insiders in the sector do not anticipate a major increase in harvest projections.

Additionally, the market is favourable for a head start from South Africa, and the grapefruit season is developing well. Turkey, Israel, and Spain are nearing the end of their citrus growing seasons. The lemon market is anticipated to stay stable, with Argentina unlikely to participate due to internal problems.

The mandarin season is off to a positive start, with Morocco and Spain fully prepared for the season. This is expected to result in a shortage of mandarins on the market for the next three to four weeks. South Africa exported more mandarins than Peru, which should help balance the market.

Unstable weather in some regions has caused damage to mandarins and oranges, but the harvest looks good in other areas. Good quality hand oranges are limited, and South Africa has the opportunity to start early. There are few juice oranges from Spain, and Egypt’s export status remains uncertain.

The False Codling Moth and Citrus Black Spot have once more come under tougher regulation in Europe. In some parts of South Africa, cooling capacity is still an issue, but industry experts are convinced that the nation is well-equipped to deal with any problems. Last but not least, market effects of cost rises have been recognized by industry analysts. Despite the reduced Rand exchange rate, maritime freight prices are still high.
