Blackberries: Guide on How to Grow your Own Sweet Success

Grow blackberries at Home! 

Shrubs that bear fruit are blackberry plants. They are in the Rosaceae family of roses, specifically the genus Rubus. Blackberries are the fruits that blackberry bushes bear. Blackberries are rich in antioxidants, including vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, and dietary fiber, much like their near relative the raspberry. They have zero saturated fat and very little total fat. They are low in protein and high in carbs, which make up the majority of their calories. 

Throughout the summer, keep a careful check on your blackberry vines to make sure you collect the fruits in time. If the berries are left on the vine for too long, they will quickly wilt. Small and green at first, immature fruits later turn scarlet and then turn a deep, glossy black. Harvest the berries as soon as they turn black. Harvesting stops them from maturing further. You can freeze them for longer term storage or keep them unwashed in the fridge for up to seven days. To stop mold from forming, wash the blackberries just before using them in a recipe or eating them.

To cultivate blackberry plants in your backyard, use these tips: 

  1. In spring, plant blackberries. USDA hardiness zones five through eight are ideal for blackberry growth. 
  1. Choose a bright area. For blackberry plants to sprout new growth, they require full sun.  
  1.  Provide well-drained soil that is somewhat acidic. You may assist protect your blackberry bushes from frost and overwatering by creating an elevated bed or site. 
  1.  Often water blackberries when there is a drought. For optimal growth, blackberry plants require around one inch of water every week. However, ground-level watering needs to be available during dry spells. 
  1.  Keep weeds out of the growing area. Your blackberry plant will face competition from weeds for vital nutrients. 
  1.  Give blackberry plants spring and fall fertilization. When the plants come out of dormancy in the spring, fertilize them with a balanced 10-10-10 mixture. An autumn covering of organic compost can help deter weed growth and replenish soil minerals. 
  1. Cover the blackberry plants with mulch. Mulch should be poured around the base of blackberry plants to assist retain water and suppress weeds.  
  1. Trim second-year canes. Most blackberry bushes are perennials that yield fruiting canes every two years. First-year canes frequently yield foliage but no fruit. Floricanes, or second-year canes, bear fruit, flowers, and leaves. After you’ve collected the fruit, cut off the floricanes. 
  1.  Use containers to grow little cultivars. Blackberry plants can be planted in pots if you have limited space. Pick a big pot big enough to hold a mature blackberry plant’s root system. A small-growing variety like “Baby Cakes” works well in a pot and doesn’t need to be pruned.
