Recent research shows that sales of organic carrots decreased in Switzerland in February. Compared to almost 900 tonnes the year before, just 827 tonnes of organic carrots were sold in Switzerland’s retail market.
This statistic restores organic carrot sales to the same level as in February 2018, when they were 830 tonnes. It is noteworthy that conventional retail saw low average pricing of CHF2.80/kg, which is thought to be the result of greater promotional activity.
The organic fruit market is still dominated by organic bananas. In February 2023, sales of organic bananas increased by 0.5% to a total of 2080 tonnes.
Additionally, with 5628 tonnes sold, this fruit accounted for 37% of the overall volume of sales of organic fruits. Surprisingly, in Switzerland, the cost of organic bananas stayed constant at CHF2.87/kg from the previous year.
These statistics show that Swiss consumers are still choosing healthy, organic foods, with bananas remaining a top choice. It’s important to keep in mind that campaign activity has increased, despite the fact that sales of organic carrots have decreased, demonstrating that efforts to promote organic carrots are still ongoing.
The market for organic food in Switzerland continues to show potential, so it will be interesting to see how it changes over the next months.
