Avocado consumption has experienced a significant surge over the past decade, leading to a parallel increase in production and trade. This rise in demand has propelled avocados to become a sought-after premium product within the fresh produce industry, appealing to consumers and producers due to its profitability.
According to a recent report analyzing data from 2012 to 2022, the global avocado market now boasts a value of approximately US$18 billion. The report suggests that while the avocado trade will continue to expand in the coming years, the market will become more competitive, necessitating greater efficiency and a stronger focus on sustainability. As the availability of avocados is expected to remain stable, consumers can anticipate relatively affordable prices in key markets, further boosting the popularity of this super fruit.
Over the span of just ten years, global avocado production has experienced rapid growth, with a compound annual growth rate of 7%. In 2022, total production reached 8.4 million metric tons. Major avocado-producing regions include countries such as Mexico, which currently accounts for a significant portion of global avocado output and witnessed notable growth over the last decade.
Besides Mexico, other leading avocado producers include several Latin American countries. Colombia and Peru, for example, have seen substantial increases in production, contributing to a significant share of global production.
Conversely, the United States, which previously ranked among the top avocado exporting countries in 2012, has been surpassed by other nations that have significantly increased their production.
Regarding exports and imports, while average annual exports increased by a considerable percentage, they experienced a decrease in 2022. The growth in shipments from certain countries could not offset the lower production and exports from others.
Mexico remains a major exporter, with significant quantities of avocados being shipped globally. Peru has exhibited notable growth in exports, while other countries have also made strides in increasing their export volumes.
In terms of imports, the United States remains the largest avocado importer globally, primarily relying on specific countries as its main suppliers. Other countries have shown substantial growth in avocado imports.
Sustainability is a crucial aspect when discussing the avocado industry, particularly in relation to water usage. Stakeholders within the industry are increasingly concerned about sustainable practices and are making efforts to educate consumers about the nutritional benefits of avocados and the sustainability challenges associated with their production.
Due to various factors such as climate conditions and water availability, farmers around the world have been adopting advanced irrigation systems to optimize water usage in avocado cultivation. Different regions employ varying approaches, with some relying on rainfall while others require irrigation to supplement limited rainfall during specific months.
