The agricultural industry has been significantly impacted by the recent torrential downpours and storms that hit Peru, especially on the northern coast. The head of the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Management (Midagri), Nelly Paredes, claims that 96 kilometres of the 433 kilometres of irrigation canals that have been damaged or destroyed have been lost. Furthermore, three reservoirs were destroyed, and 17 reservoirs were impacted.

Heavy rains and storms have destroyed 4,850 hectares of crops, with 4,067 hectares lost. The Catastrophic Agrarian Insurance (SAC), which is administered by the regional agricultural directorates, is available to farmers who have lost crops. Personnel from Midagri is already on hand to help regional agrarian directorates with inspections of impacted farms, and some farmers have already received insurance reimbursements.

Midagri has given equipment for numerous regions, including La Libertad, Cajamarca, Lambayeque, Piura, Lima, and Tumbes, to help with cleanup efforts. Almost 100 kilometers of canals have been cleared, benefiting 23,631.6 hectares of agricultural production. 51 motor pumps have also been distributed to numerous areas to aid in cleanup activities. The heavy rains and storms have caused significant damage to the agricultural sector in Peru. However, with the support of the Catastrophic Agrarian Insurance and the efforts of Midagri and regional agricultural directorates, farmers are being assisted in the inspection of affected farms and in the clean-up efforts to help restore agricultural production in the affected regions.
